Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Jewelry

What is the process?

Electroforming is the process of fusing microscopic copper particles onto a conductive surface, submerged in an electrolyte acidic solution through an electrical current. This process takes 12 to 24 hours per piece and requires many steps in order to perfect the forming process.

For custom orders, each crystal is intuitively chosen based on the needs of the recipient.  If the pieces are designed before they have found their place, the crystals are chosen with love, time and intention.  Read more about our process here.

What materials are used?

Lion Eyes Jewelry is nickel and lead free.  We choose hypoallergenic materials whenever possible.  All of our crystals are ethically and sustainably sourced and considerably chosen with everyone’s best interest at heart.  We work with mainly raw crystals, as the beauty of Earth’s gifts are so captivating, the pieces often speak for themselves.

Because Lion Eyes Jewelry uses natural crystals pulled straight from the earth, please allow for unique variations in shape, color, transparency and texture of the stones.

All pieces have the base metal of copper to start.  Once formed, the piece is either left in its original copper state and or it is plated in the thickest possible plating of either pure silver, 18k rose gold or 14k yellow gold.  Each piece is sealed to preserve the metal finish for as long as possible. Upon request, liver of sulfur can be applied to the copper to give it an antique finish.

For necklaces, the chain is of the highest quality rose gold filled, 14k yellow gold filled or sterling silver.  If you purchase a copper piece, the chain is either solid copper or a copper alloy to ensure it does not turn color or turn your skin green with time.

Does plated jewelry wear over time?

Plated jewelry is created by coating a base metal with a layer of precious metal, such as gold or silver. While plated jewelry can be a more affordable option than solid gold or silver, it is important to understand that the plating can wear off over time with regular use. This process can take a number of years or never happen at all. Plating typically wears faster on rings due to direct contact with skin. Necklaces tend to never wear. Because of this, when plating in gold or silver, we choose the THICKEST possible plating option for our pieces.

Factors such as the friction and acidity of your skin, exposure to water and chemicals, and the amount of wear and tear can all contribute to the wearing of the plating. This can cause the base metal to show through, resulting in a change in the appearance of your jewelry.

To help prolong the life of your plated jewelry, we recommend taking it off before showering, swimming, or exercising, and avoiding exposure to harsh chemicals such as perfumes and lotions until dty. Additionally, you can gently clean your plated jewelry with gentle soap and water from time to time or a soft cloth to remove any dirt or oils that may have accumulated.

Rest assured, with proper care and maintenance, you can help extend the life of your plated jewelry and continue to enjoy it for years to come! If your plating wears off on your jewelry, We are happy to re-plate it for you for as low as $10. Many jewelers also offer re-plating.

How do I care for my jewelry?

If you purchase a shiny copper piece, you can let the copper patina on its own. Copper is a living metal that is forever changing. It will dull and darken fairly quickly over time. You can use the polishing cloth provided with every order, to restore your copper piece back to shine within seconds. Tarnx Tarnish remover is a solution you can purchase on amazon that will also restore your copper piece back to its original shine AND color within seconds. If you love copper but do not want the upkeep, ask for your copper piece to be ‘antiqued’. This is the process of adding Liver of Sulfur (LOS) to copper, which is a patina that will give a darker, more rustic finish. There is no upkeep to this finish.

Jewelry plated in silver can tarnish over time as all silver does. You can lightly buff the tarnish off with the polishing cloth provided or use a silver cleaning solution. I have better luck with the silver cleaning solution. Tarnish happens with prolonged exposure to oxygen. To prevent this, you can store your silver in an airtight ziploc bag.

All jewelry can be gently washed with mild soap and water every so often to clean. If your stones are looking ‘dried out’, you can apply a small amount of coconut oil to the stone. Rub it in and wipe clean with tissue.

Sizing Information

How can I find out my ring size?

If you do not know your ring size, you can go to any local jeweler who can size your fingers in minutes. You can also print out a ring sizer online (google ring sizer), cut it out and measure that way. Just make sure you are printing at 100%. You can also buy a ring sizer for a few dollars on amazon. Please know, I do my best to get your ring to the exact size you want, however because we are essentially forming metal one particle at a time, I do not have precise control over the size. For this reason, the ring size may fluctuate up to a quarter size. This should not affect how it fits since the finger has a little wiggle room:)

What if my ring doesn't fit?

If your ring size differs significantly from what you originally told me, I am happy to remake the ring at no cost to you.

What length are your necklaces?

I offer any custom length from 14 inches up to 24 inches, included in the price of your necklace. If you would like a length longer than 24 inches, the additional cost is $12. If you would like a 2 inch extender, the additional cost is $5.

Can you resize my ring?

Due to the nature of this craft, resizing is not an option. If you purchase a wrap ring and find it is not the correct size, please do not bend it. This metal formation is incredibly durable but it will crack if you bend it.
